Virginia’s heat and humidity make air-conditioned entertainment an easy sell most of the year — and an escape room is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon or evening with friends, family, or coworkers.
If you’re looking for escape rooms near Chesterfield and Midlothian VA, you’re on the right track. Whether you want puzzle-heavy challenges, family-friendly rooms, or something with a bit more scale and difficulty, the Richmond area has a solid mix to choose from.
We’ll walk you through seven options in and around the Chesterfield and Midlothian area. Some are names you already know. Others might surprise you.
The Escape Adventures Chester, near Richmond VA (That’s us!)
Located in Chester, VA, The Escape Adventures is our own take on the classic escape-room experience—and a convenient option for players in Chesterfield and Midlothian.
We currently offer three themed rooms: Clockwork Odyssey, a medium-difficulty adventure with a steampunk/time-travel twist; Lab Rats, our harder challenge set in a mysterious medical research facility; and BlackBeard’s Revenge, a medium-difficulty pirate adventure.
Each experience gives your team 60 minutes to solve puzzles, uncover clues, and complete your mission. Our rooms accommodate 2–10 players, and every booking is private, so you get the room to yourselves rather than being grouped with strangers.
Whether you’re planning a night out with friends, a family activity, a birthday celebration, or a team-building event, we’ve got three different adventures to choose from. And for us, the best part is watching a group go from “We have no idea what we’re doing” to “WE ACTUALLY DID IT!” in under an hour. As one player put it, “We’ve never been to an escape room before and were worried the kids wouldn’t solve it, but Blackbeards Revenge was perfect.”
Breakout Games Richmond
Breakout Games is a national chain with a Richmond location at 9101 Midlothian Turnpike, right on the Chesterfield/Richmond line.
Six rooms are currently running: The Kidnapping, Kidnapping 2: Afraid of the Dark, Island Escape, Mystery Mansion, Bomb Squad, and Operation: Casino. Pricing is tiered by group size — smaller groups pay more per person, up into the $40s, while larger groups pay less. That’s a contrast to The Escape Adventures, which keeps a flat $30 per player no matter how big or small your group is.
The Richmond location has built a strong reputation since opening in 2017, holding a 4.9-star rating across more than 800 reviews. All rooms are private, with a game master monitoring by camera and offering hints on request.
Gnome & Raven
Gnome & Raven, at 9200 Stony Point Parkway in Richmond, bills itself as the nation’s first escape room built specifically for children — though the puzzles scale up for adults too.
Four rooms are on offer: Wizard’s Castle, Tomb Ruins, Shipwrecked, and Magic Lamp, the last of which won a Golden Lock Award in 2022. Pricing is $35 per player with a 4-player minimum, or a flat $350 for groups of 10-12. That minimum makes it a tougher fit for pairs or trios — The Escape Adventures has no per-player minimum, just a $75 minimum spend, so smaller groups aren’t priced out.
Reviews cite out the props and atmosphere. Room Escape Artist liked the lobby’s design.
Escape Old Towne
Escape Old Towne sits at 104 N Sycamore St in the historic district of Old Towne Petersburg, a short drive south of Chester.
Current rooms include Mad Tea Party, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Area 51, alongside a lineup of VR escape rooms and VR arcade-style games. That mix of physical and VR experiences is a point of difference from The Escape Adventures, which sticks strictly to traditional, prop-based rooms. Worth noting: local coverage from 2025 describes new ownership under Davida and Enos Stevenson, so if you’ve visited before under a different room lineup, expect some changes.
Pricing has historically run around $25 per person for standard rooms, with discounts for military, students, and seniors. Public hours are limited — typically a few evenings midweek and longer hours on weekends — so it’s worth checking current hours before making the drive.
River City Escape Room
River City Escape Room, at 8047 W Broad St in Richmond’s West End, is locally owned by husband-and-wife team Sam and Jen Williams, who opened it in 2016.
The lineup includes Manhattan, a Manhattan Project-themed room praised for its detailed set design; Alice in Wonderland; and Chocolate Factory, a popular pick for mixed-age birthday groups. Pricing runs around $25 per player with a $75 minimum, private booking only. Unlike The Escape Adventures, which offers 10% off for veterans, first responders, college students, and seniors, River City doesn’t advertise any group discounts.
Escape Room RVA
One of Richmond’s original escape room companies, Escape Room RVA opened in 2015 at the Village Shopping Center on Three Chopt Road, tucked behind a Martin’s grocery store. It’s run by Ravenchase Adventures, the same company behind Gnome & Raven.
Past rooms have included Steam Punk, Mind Trap, Seven Deadly Sins, and Plato’s Cave, though the company has historically rotated its lineup every few months, so current room names may differ from what’s listed elsewhere online — worth double-checking before booking. That’s a contrast to The Escape Adventures, which runs a fixed, stable set of three rooms rather than rotating its lineup. Pricing has historically been around $25 per person, with groups of fewer than 12 sometimes paired with other parties depending on the room.
Red Door Escape Room — Richmond
Red Door is a Texas-based chain with a Richmond location at 11800 W. Broad Street in Short Pump, on the opposite side of the metro from Chesterfield.
Six rooms are currently available: Captain Maniacal’s Lairbratorium (a shorter 30-minute sci-fi room), Confinement, Fair Game, Prison Break, The Gift, and Once Upon A Time, with difficulty levels ranging from 6/10 to 9/10. Full-length episodes run $37.95 per player, noticeably more than The Escape Adventures’ flat $30 — and Short Pump is also a longer drive from Chester than the other rooms on this list.
Reviews are strong, with players frequently calling out individual staff members by name for making the experience feel personal. All games are private.
